on her way and the world was
overpopulated.
If only the dreams weren't
so vivid; so fantastic.
If dreaming was the
only problem.
Living remotely doesn't help.
Different characters like "David".

Keeping his family safe is
his number one priority.
But it’s hard and

Elli was standing in the middle of one of the three corridor sections with a piece of equipment.

Chris: 'Yes?' He walked up to her.
Elli: 'Yes.' Looking at him.
Both were drained.
There was an unspoken silence as screens filled with information on all five terrorists.
The cameras picked up the front four and information was filling the screens about them.
They were hired help.
Dimorez's Assistant: 'Found him Sergeant. Sean Carter, a mercenary. He has the daughter Dondri and they are still inside.'

Even over the top of the sound of the hey bails they were resting on; they could hear it.
Youngest Daughter Melanie: 'Like a crackling.'
David / Father: 'And a snapping.'
The daughters were agreeing.

David / Father: ‘Wait.’ In a soft tone looking through the scope knowing exactly where his daughters were.
Middle Daughter Jamie: ‘There.’ Still immersed in shadow and pointing to the far side of the crop. ‘More.’

Kim, the oldest daughter who had ventured outside, takes another step towards the crop and can see them now.
Eldest Daughter Kim: ‘They’re fully outside of the crop.’ Ecstatic.
A crunching sound and them getting faster, closer.
Youngest Daughter Melanie: ‘Get ‘em girl.’ The youngest back inside at the barn door opening; her cheeks pale turning her fork tines.
People of all descriptions walk out from the crop and all are wearing old women’s clothes and keep walking.

Youngest Daughter Melanie: ‘Fifty?’
David / Father: ‘I’d say eighty or more.’
The daughter mouths his words and nods.
David aims and pulls the trigger.

'The crop was mostly still upright' Jamie thought and climbed the ladder to the loading hatch. All she could see was her sister Kim slaying through dozens of elderly women.
Occasionally one of them would fall onto her and Kim would scream.
Youngest Daughter Melanie: ‘Are you ok?’ Still watching how many her father was hitting but readying herself for what was next.
Eldest Daughter Kim: ‘Yeah, I’m ok.’ Annoyed. ‘They just sting a little you know?’
Youngest Daughter Melanie: ‘Yes, I know.’ Watching just how many her father was hitting but also. ‘They’re spreading out dad.’
David / Father: ‘Yep, but plenty of ammo.’ He responded by adjusting his stance.

Middle Daughter Jamie: ‘Hundreds.’
There was silence then.
David / Father: ‘Ladies.’ Just pointed behind. ‘Get your guns.’

Even Kim; well outside, heard it and turned; ran into the darkness trying to beat her sisters.
Youngest Daughter Melanie: ‘Yesss.’ First.
She saw the open box of one hundred magazines and it was on top of two more rows and three high all the same.
She picked one up and loaded it and as she picked up another, Jamie and Kim were giggling and elbowing each other to get in first.
By now Melanie was walking back to her usual position and both gave her a high five.

Silently a plexiglass cylinder was sliding back on a bed base revealing a young man laying with eyes closed.
A young woman floated over and had to concentrate to get a hold of the side handles of the bed base.
She looked into the cylinder waiting for enough gap to enter then she slowly made her way to the bed and knelt.
He lay motionless.
She bowed her head trying not to laugh, looked back up and laid down beside him holding on to a handle.
She turned to her side and watched him; her partner Chris.
His eyes opened.
Elli: Openly smiled. ‘I’ve been up and out and now back in again.’
He could barely raise his brow and tried to reply.
Elli: ‘Tough night huh?’
He rested on his elbows and took in the view in front.
Vast, multilevel sleeping quarters and dozens of people floating around going to lockers, going to their own see-through quarters or chatting.
She straddled him and hit a large button above his head and the plexiglass changed to a lighter grey colour.
From the outside, tropical leaves and palms.

Chris: ‘Yep. I know and I will.’
Elli: ‘You haven’t got much more of the build to go have you?’ Looked behind him at his construction.
Chris: ‘No, we’ve essentially finished the entire docking area and there’s already a booking.’

Eldest Daughter Kim: 'Want to go through this shop and see what's behind?'
Youngest Daughter Melanie: 'Inside there's stairs.' Suggesting. 'That'll lead to the roof.'
David / Father: 'Pick them off better.'
Just then a low sounding rumble came along the road.
They all looked and their faces turned into horror.
They raced inside the last shop.

David / Father: 'Get up the stairs and onto the roof.' His voice filled the empty shop.
They were running up the stairs when a coach touring bus went at full speed past the shop they were in but it was travelling diagonally and they could see the lifting of the front and smack into the cement gutter and lurch then the back end start to lean over towards them.
Melanie and Jamie were upstairs and went to reach for David and Kim when the front window smashed.
They pulled them up.

David points it down the spine of the fire stairs and waits.

Only female voices.
David repositions clanking the nozzle on the railing.
His three daughters lean over.

Eldest Daughter Kim: 'Maybe more?'
David / Father: 'Do you want to try going one down?'
Eldest Daughter Kim: 'Yeah, ok.'
Looking at them all for agreement.

David has the nozzle pointed at the fire exit door the next floor down and winces at the hose length one above.
Suddenly the door opens and David turns the nozzle and as the water hits the door slamming it.
Youngest Daughter Melanie: Yelling. 'Wait. That's Tod. He's cool.'
The door opens ajar and a young man peers out.
Seeing them, moves out into the fire escape joining them.
Tod: 'I don't know what's going on but there's no security. The police are on their way though.'
Middle Daughter Jamie: Nearly breathless looking down. 'I saw movement.'
David looked over the edge and further down were lots of shadows.
Fast moving shadows.

Eldest Daughter Kim: 'Want to go down another one?'
They all looked at the length of hose.
David gave it a pull and the full cloth hose slid down the stairs and started to pile up.

Tod stood behind David to help with the enormous pressure.

We can't turn off the emergency repeater message and we cannot do any more to the vessel until it arrives here. Please could you all make your way in a reasonable fashion to Station Five. The emergency staff are there and please show them all courtesy when they direct you. Thank you all under these circumstances.'
Everyone appreciated the announcement.
Elli 'How many people this end?' Asking Chris as they made their way down and through.
Chris 'Eighty to ninety.'
Elli 'And the middle and that end?'
Chris 'Same and same.'
They were stopped by his team; his reliable crew.
They were family.
There were four of them and they all embraced Elli and Chris.
~
They passed through the kitchen area which had only a few staff remaining and they continued through and could see ahead the sign Station Five.
The security was standard and slowly everyone made their way through with their different equipment.
Elli 'C'mon.'
Chris held her hand.
She raced him through the crowds; wall after wall with partitions and single, fold up beds in each. She showed him the number tag she was given and they found their space.
Chris Surprised. 'Descent.'
Their friends found them and were talking about what was going on when security guards appeared.
Security Guard 'Mr Skedes?'
Chris looked up.
Security Guard 'Could you and Mrs Skedes please come with us now?'
They did and were taken away from everyone down a corridor and into a cubicle.
The glass turned to white.

There were a number of staff around tables with lots of equipment.
Dimorez 'Mr Skedes, I am Sergeant Dimorez. I am in charge here now when things like this happen. They don't, as you know.' The sergeant looked around as if admiring the Venus complex. 'We have a situation and I would really appreciate your full support.'
Chris 'Sure, yes of course. Whatever you need.' Chris noticed the Sergeant didn't smile much and looked at Elli who was further over at another table and was offered a drink.
Dimorez 'Without giving too much away, we are going to "force" them to dock here,' The sergeant showed Chris in front of a few staff.
It was a projected map of the entire Venus base then it zoomed in to where they were and animations; flashing lines and arrows told the story. 'They won't release any passengers immediately but, we want to create a false hope.'
Chris 'You can't control the vessels coming in or out.'
Dimorez 'That would be incorrect Mr Skedes.'
Chris put his hands on his hips and thought about this.
All those regular planning meetings both ends; authorities and red tape.
Chris 'Ok, ok then what do you want from me?'
Dimorez 'You have eleven hours to create an arrivals area here.' The Sergeant pointed both at the projection and snapped his fingers and the white wall instantly went clear showing a corridor. 'That third section like a Z, that becomes the arrivals lounge.'
Chris Just shook his head. 'We're good but that'll take minimum twenty four and all our tooling-.'
Dimorez 'Mr Skedes please.' The Sergeant cutting him off and there was silence. 'I'm having my team in there ready to go in fifteen.'
Chris 'No.' Softly walking around. 'My guys need suiting up.'
Dimorez 'We have all the suites here.'
Chris 'The walls aren't a problem, it's the structure and the sealing off and testing.'
Dimorez 'The stockroom is fully stocked and my men will help you to get the job done.'
Chris 'It's just not enough time.'
Just then a staff member approached the Sergeant and he shot a look at Chris, nodded and the projection screen showed three overall suited men and Dondri in front of them with a dart gun over her shoulder.
Dimorez 'I'm sorry Mr Skedes but we need that corridor done now.'

The Z shaped corridor was built and the security team were sealed into the wall panels.Elli was standing in the middle of one of the three corridor sections with a piece of equipment.
It read 100% breathable.
Chris: 'Yes?' He walked up to her.
Elli: 'Yes.' Looking at him.
Both were drained.
SPACE STATION BASE. SECURITY CONTROL ROOM. VENUS
Dimorez 'Mr Skedes, have you got a brother?'
Chris 'Yes.' Sitting back in the control room.
Dimorez 'Do you know where he is?'
Chris 'Yes, he works at Larns Point.'
Dimorez 'Do you know where he is right now Mr Skedes?'
Chris could tell it wasn't sounding good and swallowed.
Dimorez 'He is being held up in the docking station Caesar Four above earth.'
Chris just listened.
Dimorez 'If these terrorists don't get their demands met, they will kill him and your daughter.'
Chris started shaking.
Elli was just sitting frozen.
Chris 'Well, what do they want?' Just managing to open his mouth.
Dimorez 'One of your brother's contacts, unbeknownst to him, has links to someone who has links to these people. Larns Point does administrative work for all kinds of things. The lifts and shuttles that take everyone and everything to and from the base stations above Earth, as you know for you built Caesar Two and Three and other big projects including contracts for construction out this way.'
Chris 'And one of those is here?' Joining the dots.
Dimorez 'That's correct.' There was a moments pause. 'They are basically saying "If we can't have this, no one can."'
Chris looked at Elli again and she looked even more drained but he knew her; how strong she was. She was his rock.
Chris 'So what's going to happen?'
The security staff suddenly started to get back to work.
Dimorez 'What I am prepared to reveal to you is pretty much what you are already thinking.'
Chris just shook his head and listened.
Dimorez 'We have dummied the plans to show this new section, added all the protocols as if this is just what can happen up here and have permission to land. We feel strongly that those who are in control, will be letting the on-board systems land them wherever it is "suppose to" land them.'
Chris Softly and impressed. 'Ok.'
Dimorez 'So now we just wait until they dock.' The Sergeant stood up and walked over to Elli and then sat beside her. 'Let us do our job now.'

SPACE STATION BASE. ARRIVALS / DEPARTURES DOCK. VENUS
The view from the end where they all were was incredible.
The entire Venus station was in full view.
Two lengthy corridors separated docking areas from working and living but that was the last thing on everybody's minds as they watched the screens and the strip clock
ONE HOUR THREE MINUTES FIVE SECONDS
The entire staff had no clue what was planned and simply waited out in their makeshift quarters, watching the news which started repeating. Some were annoyed but on the whole, just waited and stayed quiet.
People were up; standing near the windows looking out. Voices raised and others started looking at the strip clock.
TWENTY THREE MINUTES 32 SECONDS
People started to voice the time and got anxious then the announcement.
'Attention, the ORION flight is due in twenty two minutes. Please make your way to-.’ The announcement was cut off.
There was silence.
A small white dot appeared on the horizon then gradually became recognisable as a large vessel.
It was a spectacular sight as large, framework arms shaped like crescent moons appeared from out of white boxes on the ground ready to hold the vessel.
The vessel seemed to glide in between six arches.
Dimorez His voice through headset. 'Here we go people.'
SPACE STATION BASE. SECURITY CONTROL ROOM. VENUS
The Sergeant was in a room with his people and Chris and Elli were in the next room with security staff.
The wall between them was white.
All rooms had the news on but was a loop.
Chris 'There will be a few moments to equalise air pressure and a cleanse. All automated and cannot be stopped.' Talking to the four in the room then raised his eyebrows. 'Then again, what do I know?'
Elli held his hands.
There was a long silence.

Chris: 'Now the doors will be opening and everybody can get out.' Chris swung a look at the white wall separating them from Dimorez control room and his team.
Security: Whispering from within the walls. 'There is no movement. I repeat no movement.' Only heard in the control room where Sergeant Dimores and his team were.
Some keys on a keyboard were tapped and suddenly a screen in Dimores control room had the docking corridor view and it looked endless.
The keypad was tapped again and the camera zoomed in.
Dimorez's Assistant: 'It looks empty.'
Dimorez: Low tone. 'Look sharp people.'
Control Room Staff: 'Wait, there's movement.'
The camera view showed what looked like the grey interior to be panels held together and were separating and all the flight crew, staff and passengers came out slowly all at once.
Security: Whispering from within the walls. 'Passed me.'
Dimorez's Assistant: 'That's Alpha team one sir.'
Dimorez nodded watching every screen.
There were four dots "within" the walls.
Alpha were the furthest towards the vessel and either side of the Z shaped corridor then Bravo were at the beginning of the next corner and either side inside waiting for their command.

It didn't take much for the passengers to start breaking up once they saw the gateway to the Terminal and Seating area.

Dimorez: 'Hold.' As he was directed to another screen with laser pointers highlighting the terrorists.
Dimorez: 'Stick with the plan. Alpha team standby.'
Alpha Team Whispering from within the walls. 'Alpha team ready.'
Dimorez: 'Bravo team ready?'
Bravo Team Whispering from within the walls. 'On your go.'
SPACE STATION. ARRIVALS / DEPARTURES DOCK. VENUS
The passengers were almost to the open gateway and started to walk faster.
SPACE STATION BASE. SECURITY CONTROL ROOM. VENUS
On the screen, the two front terrorists were highlighted dots and were obviously trying to hide amongst the people.
Dimorez's Assistant: 'They're splitting apart Sergeant.'
Dimorez: 'Excellent.' He watched as clearly he could see the two terrorist dots trying to spread out as they neared the gateway. 'On my go Bravo.'
Bravo Team Whispering from within the walls. 'Ready HQ.'
Sergeant Dimorez and his staff checking the other three dots; the second two were moving along but with the back end of the group and Sean Carter still at the very back within the vessel with one dot. Then the front two terrorist dots sped up.
Dimorez's Assistant: 'The front two are in the gateway sir.'
Dimorez: 'Bravo go.'

The front lot of passengers were just making their way through the gateway and could see the arrivals area when suddenly and quietly a black panel slid across sealing them off.
The two terrorists were in the arrivals area and were alone.
The lights were turned off.
They were in pitch black.
The passengers then saw a large side panel open and most figured out what was going on and rushed sideways and quietly.

Seeing the cameras and terrorist dots in the second group further back and coming around the corner.

Alpha team emerged from the other side.
One went backwards to the vessel and the other went forward coming up behind the group.

Dimorez: 'I cannot believe it.' As he saw via Alpha's body cameras that the two other terrorists were walking along just behind the second group. Alpha team body cameras showed the terrorists easily behind taken down.
INTERIOR ORION SPACESHIP
All Sean Carter saw was being sealed off into total blackness and a heavy jolt from behind.
SPACE STATION. ARRIVALS / DEPARTURES / DOCK. VENUS
The same happened to the front two surrounded by blackness then a flash bomb went off then Charlie team in black took them.
Quietly, a figure dressed as a passenger walked off the vessel and through into the gateway arrivals area which now had some lights on.
Delta Team: 'HQ this is Delta team. Carter has been isolated and "package" is safe.'
Dimorez: 'Copy that Delta.'

ORION SPACESHIP
Carter's POV. The ORION floor was on the side wall then everything went dark.
Then the floor was on the ceiling.
Dimorez: 'Carter? This is Sergeant Dimorez.' The Sergeant's voice came over the speakers within the vessel. 'You have been charged with kidnapping, taking hostages and various other criminal offences. Under normal law you would be tried through a court.'
Carter sat up then slowly tried to stand up.
Dimorez: 'But here on Venus, they have their own justice. Their own rules. Some might say barbaric. You are about to find out Carter.'
EXTERIOR ORION SPACESHIP
Carter was trying to find his feet and nearly standing when a panel to his side slowly opened.
His eyes went wide.

Chris, Elli and Dondri were entering their personal cylinder. Chris's team caught up with them.
Doug 'Nice work.'
Chris 'Think I, we might have some time off.' Putting his arms around his two girls. 'Our job is actually done here and you guys need a break from me anyway.'
Doug 'We're hearing your brother is doing well?'
Elli 'Yes, yes he is. Thanks.' Leaning her head on Chris. 'Full recovery and has been moved from Caesar Four to One.'
The seven of them stood in silence.
'From there, we'll work out whether to go home or stay there for awhile.'
Dondri Insisting. 'And we will go by shuttle not lift this time.'
They looked at Dondri and then looked at what she was looking at.
It was the strip clock

END
The original idea was a commune-of-sorts religious family with many children and a “normal” family “pulled-over” for a break and came across this family who seem to have isolated themselves and they would discover – surrounded by wheatfields…
But
Science fiction got the better of me and this led to a planet etc…
I really did not want to do Mars because of its predictability to a reader and not the Moon…
I wanted the family aspect to come through strongly and a good sense that they all live well on a colony / community space station albeit on a planet.
The terror unfolding after all characters have been established.
Warmth and togetherness was important as the idea was being so isolated.
This is the closest I would get to zombies as I’m not a big fan so I made them more like a side-show-alley-knock ’em over-style so it was easier to write.
